What You Can Do To Prevent Injury To Your Back?

If you have an office job you most likely have a sharp pain right between your shoulder blades, or you may have a lower back problem. The source of both of these symptoms is usually poor posture, and sitting for too long at one time. So, what’s the solution? First, you need to get your back in proper alignment with an adjustment or two from one of our Reno Chiropractors, and then you should begin a new office routine which includes sitting up straight, getting up more often, possibly work 45 minutes on, and 15 off, and stretch before you return to your work.
Stress is our reaction to a “Fight or Flight” situation.  Our bodies prepare for this response by increasing heart rate, slowing digestion and tensing our muscles.  It is that muscular reaction that can have an effect on how our joints and especially our spines feel.  The job of all muscles is to pull.  There is not a single muscle in our body that pushes.  As a result, when one muscle pulls a joint in one direction an opposing or antagonistic muscle has to pull it in the other direction.  In the fight or flight response, the stress we feel is from agonistic and antagonist muscles tensing at the same time.
This loads and compresses the joints and can exacerbate underlying inflammatory and degenerative conditions to the point that they become symptomatic.  Often if there is degeneration in the neck this will present as neck stiffness, pain, “pinching” or even headaches and can even precipitate a migraine.  If there is an underlying disc bulge or herniation, the added compression can lead to the disc putting even more pressure on sensitive structures like nerve roots existing in the spine.  This can lead to symptoms like numbness, pins and needles sensation or even deep ache into the arms and legs.  None of these symptoms are a “normal reaction” to stress.   If you find yourself experiencing these symptoms, talk to one of our Reno Chiropractors about your situation, and what you can do to prevent these everyday aches and pains.
