Xavier Martinez, DC

Dr. Martinez was born and raised in Reedley, CA. Working on his family's vineyard was instrumental in developing a strong and dedicated work ethic. He attended Whittier College in Southern California earning a Bachelor's Degree in
Biology.  He earned his Chiropractic Degree in 1993 from Palmer College of Chiropractic - West in San Jose, CA. He moved to Reno in December of 1998.
In 2000 he sustained a cervical spinal disc injury following a severe car accident. The disc bulge compressed the C6-C7 spinal nerve in his neck causing a 60% loss of strength and atrophy to his right arm. The injury eventually required spinal surgery. The surgery restored the strength of his right arm  but he was left with severe neck pain from the resulting scar tissue. From the unique perspective of a doctor and spinal patient, he realized the limitations of surgery to address post traumatic adhesions (scar tissue). Over the years he and Dr. Welch integrated spinal decompression technology, Physical Therapy and specific biomechanically based manipulations to disrupt post traumatic scar tissue. Recently he has expanded the program to include targeted exercise to address the muscle deficits and imbalances that often accompany chronic joint injuries. Thanks to this integrated approach, Dr. Martinez enjoys a life free from the debilitating neck pain he once had.  Today, he successfully employs this same approach with each of his patients. You can be assured that when you are seen by Dr. Martinez, you will be cared for by someone who can truly be empathetic to your situation from having been there himself.

Sheila Bertrand, PT (Physical Therapist)

Sheila was born in Pennsylvania. When in High School she went on a field trip to the local hospital where she was introduced to each medical specialty. The one that fascinated her the most was physical therapy. She felt a calling in the idea of helping an injured person regain their physical freedom and  independence.
This idea lead her to attend the University of Pittsburgh. While taking prerequisites for Physical Therapy School, she spent a great deal of time working with athletes. This shaped her interest further and lead her to add a Minor in athletic training to her major in Physical Therapy.

Sheila has been a licensed Physical Therapist now for 31 years.  In that time she has seen her calling actualized in the helping of thousands of patients regain their health and freedom from their injuries.

“I like to challenge myself mentally and think  of each persons’ injury like a unique puzzle that is waiting to be solved.  It’s my job to figure out how to get the missing  pieces of the puzzle back into place to make the picture whole again”.
1984-Present:  12 hours each year of Continuing Education to find pearls of wisdom that will help the next patient.
1980-1984:       B.S. Physical Therapy with Minor in Athletic Training
                          University of Pittsburg, Pittsburgh, PA

Dr. Trevor May

Dr. Trevor May
Dr. May has been an athlete from the time he was a child. He competed in gymnastics for nine years on the National Level and trained as a member of the United States Olympic Develop Program. He also played three years of varsity basketball in high school. Competing at such an intense level resulted in severe back spasms that put his senior season of basketball in jeopardy. After refusing to take muscle relaxers to mask the pain, he sought out a form of therapy that emphasized rehabilitation instead of pain medication. At eighteen years old Dr. May reluctantly and skeptically received his first chiropractic adjustment.  It was an experience that changed his life and how he felt about chiropractic medicine. From a pain and functional perspective, the result he felt following his adjustment was immediate and dramatic.  From that day forward he dedicated his efforts to become a chiropractic physician in hopes that he could one day help others in the same manner.
Dr. May graduated with a degree in Health Ecology from the University of Nevada Reno before attending Palmer College of Chiropractic West where he graduated as part of the International Chiropractic Honor Society. Palmer West is widely recognized for their emphasis in sports chiropractic medicine which has shaped Dr. May’s approach to treating his patients. His competitive sports background was a natural fit with the sports physiology model of rehabilitation.  This model focuses on disrupting underlying adaptive scar tissue that forms in and around joints as a result of injury, chronic stress (such as long periods of sitting), or faulty biomechanics.  Combining a biomechanics understanding of joint motion with Chiropractic, he is able to restore range of motion and overall function to your spine and other joints. After restoring the foundation of joint mobility, Dr. May goes on to integrate muscle coordination, strength, and endurance through a targeted and personal exercise program. This integrated approach creates the balance of mobility and stability that every individual needs to live an active and rewarding life without recurring bouts of back pain.
